Cooper's of Criggleston

Found at Ossett and Chickenley Heath - Charles Cooper, my Great Grandfather was married to Charlotte Parkin, daughter of Thomas Parkin and Ann his wife (nee Bevers). Charles died quite young, it is said, by accident, when my grandmother Hilda, his only child was 7 years .

This was my first venture into my family history. My mother, Mary Wilkinson, daughter of Hilda and James Wilkinson, had told me that she had attended the funeral of her grandmother, Charlotte, in North Ossett Church Graveyard, only year before I was born, so my Husband and I set off.

My mother had a good idea where we might find the grave of Charlotte and Charles.
Luck was on our side, not only did I find their grave, but also that of my Great Grandparents Thomas Parkin and Ann his wife (nee Bevers), and three of their young Infants.

I was not sure of this at that time, but I knew that Charlotte had been nee Parkin before her marriage to Charles.

I had a nudge from Margaret Cooper, wife of Ernest Cooper who was, in fact, my grandmother's cousin, to take my searchings further. When we met, Ernest told me, he used to visit an old lady in Ossett with his grandmother, whom he thinks was Charlotte, but he was only six when she died.

The following are some of my findings. Thanks to the Yorkshire mailing list and Malcolm Cooper, I am on my way to discovering even more about my Cooper ancestors. I hope some of these are yours too.

John and Sarah Cooper
John Cooper baptised 24 November 1751 and Sarah Halley  were married 12 January 1772 at Sandal Magna Parish Church

John and Ann Cooper
John Cooper son of above John and Sarah, was born at Dirtcar, and baptised 2 February 1777 and he married Ann Leech 4 May 1794 at Felkirk Parish Church.

Charles and Elizabeth Cooper
Charles Cooper son of above John and Ann, was born 21 November 1794 at Felkirk , and married Elizabeth …....? Born at (Ingestry) Derbyshire, 4 May 1814 at Wrangle. I found four children, George 5 January 1823, Mary Ann 24 April 1823, William 27 July 1826 (he married Hannah Moore Oct/Dec 1844 daughter of William Moore and his wife Sarah Briggs), Charles born 1828c

William and Hannah Cooper
William Cooper and Hannah (nee Moore) were married in the first quarter of the year 1844 in the Doncaster Resignation District. Hannah baptised 15 October 1820 at Frickley with Clayton was a widow by 1881 of 65 years, I found four children - James 1848, Lydia 1850, Charles born 29 June 1852 at Hall Green Crigglestone died at Ossett 1 March 1887, John 1858c

Charles and Charlotte Cooper
Charles Cooper and Charlotte (nee Parkin) married 3 Oct 1877 Wellington Road Chapel. Dewsbury. Charlotte was born 21 Jan 1853 at Dewsbury Moor. The daughter of Thomas Parkin and Ann nee Bevers, died 21 December 1932 and buried 26 December 1932. Thomas father of Charlotte and Mary Ann her sister, left his "Will" in favour of them, share and share alike. Charles and Charlotte had an only child my grandmother, Hilda Cooper born 1 June 1879 died 2 March 1955 at St. Pauls Road Shipley. They were married 14 July 1906 at Zion Chapel Wibsey

James Henry Wilkinson and Hilda (nee Cooper) had a son Alec Bevers Wilkinson born 1 August 1907 at North St. Low Moor, married Lily Fearnley in 1926 somewhere in Wharfedale died 4 Jan 1986 at Bradford Royal Infirmary and a daughter Mary Wilkinson born 22 September 1913 at 2, Fountain St. Low Moor Wibsey

Mary Wilkinson died 5 March 1988 at 17 Snowden Rd. Wrose Shipley married 29 October 1932 Christ Church Windhill Shipley my father William Tompkins born 25 November 1911 at St. Ives Bingley baptised 14 Jan 1912 at Baildon Parish Church died 17 Snowden Rd. Wrose Shipley.

I was their only child Janet Louise Tompkins I am married to Ivor Edward Ogden son of Charles Edward Ogden and Lena Imeson.

I have three children Linda Ann, Angela June, and Julie Arlene, and four grandchildren, Irene, Stephanie, Kelly Ann, and Victoria Louise. and two Great grandchildren Melissa Mary, and Charlotte.
